UPDATE: The energy savings programs were scrapped by the provincial government. Applications submitted before that may still be considered, but the rebate and incentive programs are no longer accepting new applications. In 2015, commercial and industrial companies consumed more than 78.4% of the electricity distributed within Alberta. This makes it clear that any effort to significantly lower the province’s usage of electricity must give due consideration to the needs of businesses and organizations.
The Government of Alberta’s new agency, Energy Efficiency Alberta, has been given the task of helping Albertans reduce their energy consumption. While many of their programs are targeted at residential consumers, the agency is also offering a Business, Non-Profit, and Institutional Energy Savings Program that is designed specifically for businesses and non-profits. Under the program, when an organization installs approved lighting or heating equipment, the organization can then apply for a cash rebate that will cover part of the purchase and installation cost.
This program is designed to encourage organizations to replace their old, inefficient fixtures with new energy saving products.
Products Eligible for Rebates
A detailed list of eligible products is not currently available. However, rebate-eligible products will include:
- LED lights and fixtures, including LED bulbs, LED T8 tube lights, LED low/medium/high-bay fixtures, exterior LED lighting fixtures, T5 high output high-bay fixtures, occupancy sensors that shut off lights in unused rooms, and more.
- Water heating equipment, such as tankless water heaters and condensing water heaters.
- Heating and cooling equipment including warm air furnaces and commercial hot water boilers.
Program Eligibility
All businesses, non-profits, and institutions that receive electricity or electricity from Alberta utility companies are eligible for this program, with the exception of those defined as “large final emitters” under the Alberta Specified Gas Emitters Regulation.
Examples of organizations eligible for this benefit include:
- Small and medium businesses
- Office buildings
- Shopping centers
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Hotels
- Manufacturing facilities
- Agricultural companies
- Resource extractors
