Ponoka Electricity and Natural Gas Background
Ponoka is a small town in central Alberta, with a population of about 6,800 residents. Ponoka began as a waypoint on the Calgary-Edmonton Trail in the 1870s, and became the site of a Canadian Pacific Railway Station in 1891 (which was in fact one of the very first buildings to be constructed in the area).
The town of Ponoka owns the local electrical transmission system and serves as the wire service provider to the area’s residents. However, Ponoka does not have its own electric utility. Instead, ENMAX Power is the provider of electricity at Rate of Last Resort (ROLR), and ATCO Gas is the area’s ROLR natural gas supplier.
What About Water?
The Town of Ponoka’s drinking water comes from the Red Deer River, and although smaller compared to large cities.
Following the country and local standards, before being distributed, water is treated at the Red Deer Water Treatment Plant, arriving later in Ponoka through the regional water line operated by North Red Deer River Water Services Commission. The regional water line also connects with Blackfalds and Lacombe (AB cities).
Essentially, the treatment process helps remove natural minerals and any potential contaminants, ensuring the water is clean for consumption. The City of Red Deer laboratory is the one responsible for the monitoring part, conducting approximately 20,000 tests on water samples. Steps that follow and meet parameters in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, and by Alberta Environment, Parks and Protected Areas.
When it comes to rates, water and wastewater services are funded through local utility fees.
How to Set Up a Water Supply
If you’re moving into a new home in Ponoka, you’ll need to set up a utility account with the town. This involves contacting the municipal office and providing your move-in date so services can be transferred or activated.
For most households in Ponoka, water service is connected through the municipal system, which means billing will include both water usage and wastewater services.
