Crowsnest Pass Electricity and Natural Gas History
Crowsnest Pass is a municipality in Alberta, with a population of approximately 5,500 people. Crowsnest Pass was formed by the amalgamation of several smaller communities, including the towns of Blairmore and Coleman, and the villages of Bellevue and Frank.
The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass largely owes its existence to the advent of coal mining in the area during the turn of the century. While the popularity of declined precipitously over the past few decades, many residents continue to be employed by coal mines in nearby Sparwood. Many residents also worked at Devon Canada natural gas plan near Coleman, until it was closed down in 2013 after 52 years of operation.
Given the area’s long involvement in the energy industry, it’s unsurprising that the community took an active involvement in its own electrical infrastructure. Until recently, about 20% of the total electricity infrastructure in Crowsnest Pass is owned by the municipality, with the rest being owned and operated by FortisAlberta, the local wire service provider for much of the area
However, in April of 2016 the Crowsnest Pass council passed a motion to sell the local utility and electric distribution system to FortisAlberta, due to the cost of upgrading the infrastructure to properly meet local energy demand.
