SaskEnergy Gas Meters
Recently, natural gas meters in Saskatchewan were replaced by SaskEnergy with new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This replacement allows SaskEnergy to receive an exact reporting of your daily natural gas usage. This changeover means that you no longer have to provide meter reads, or have a SaskEnergy representative come on your property to read your meter. This also ensures more accurate billing, as you are never charged for estimated usage.
In addition, eliminating the need for meter reads lowers the cost of determining natural gas usage, and will in the long-term reduce the basic monthly charge.
SaskPower Electricity Meters
Electricity meters must still read by SaskPower approximately once every three months. In cases where SaskPower is unable to access your meter, such as due to pets in the yard or items obstructing the meter, you will be mailed a meter read card. You will need to conduct a meter read between one week and one day prior to your billing date.
Some homeowners are confused by their electricity meters, due to the manner in which dials alternative between clockwise and counter-clockwise labeling. But reading your meter is actually quite easy. Simply look at each dial arm, and record the number that it is pointing at. If a dial is in between two numbers, record the lower of the two numbers.
The card may also ask you to illustrate the position of the needles on each dial, which helps to prevent errors.
To eliminate the need for charging you based upon estimated usage between meter readings, SaskPower also offers homeowners the option of submitting meter readings every month. This can be done using the Submit My Meter Reading form, through your online account, using the SaskPower mobile app on your Apple or Android device, or by calling 1-888-757-6937.
If you’re still feeling uneasy about reading your meter, don’t worry. Energyrates.ca also has a blog post on how to read an old-style dial energy meter, which includes a quiz that allows you to practice your meter-reading skills.
