Homeowners and businesses in the city of Swift Current, Saskatchewan are supplied with electricity by the city-owned Light & Power department. In addition to supplying residents with electricity, the utility is also responsible for the city’s street lighting system.
The city of Swift Current purchases electricity in bulk from the provincially owned and operated utility company SaskPower, while the Light & Power division maintains the distribution network within the city limits.
The city owns and operates all electric meters within the city that are serviced by the municipal utility. In addition, it provides additional services, such as secondary overhead to underground conversion service for those currently in areas that receive electricity via overhead distribution lines. This service helps to improve the appearance of neighborhood homes by removing overhead wires, but also helps to ensure customer and worker safety when it comes to maintenance such as tree trimming or de-icing that is associated with overhead services.
