London, Ontario Energy and Natural Gas History
London is one of the older cities in Canada, originally founded as a village in 1826, in honor of its European counterpart. London managed to attain the status of a city in 1855, despite a troubled infancy during which cholera swept through the village’s inhabits and the majority of London’s buildings were destroyed by a fire in April of 1845.
London played a little-known role in the popularization of electricity in Canada. At the 1882 Toronto Industrial Exhibition (now the Canadian National Exhibition), which was a venue for demonstrating cutting edge technology and new products and ideas, the Bell Company of London assisted in providing electrical lighting, the first time a fairgrounds had ever been illuminated with electric lights. This demonstration helped inspire demand for electricity in Toronto, and that desire soon spread through the rest of Ontario, and the whole of Canada.
Twenty years later, the mayor of London, Adam Beck, was appointed by Ontario Premier Sir James Whitney to serve as the chair of the Hydro Electric Commission of Inquiry. The chief responsibility of this role was to determine whether or not Niagara Falls and other such falls in the province had potential as sources of electricity. In the course of his investigations, Beck soon became a major proponent of government utilities, which set the course for the province’s embrace of hydroelectricity in ensuing decades.
Thus, while London is not known for its involvement in the electricity or natural gas industries, the city did play an indispensable role in the province’s industrial development.
