As a regulated distributor, Enbridge Gas provides customers with natural gas at rates regulated by the Ontario Energy Board. These rates are updated on a quarterly basis, in January, April, July and October.
History of Enbridge Gas
Enbridge Gas was originally founded as Consumers Gas in 1848, two decades before the founding of Canada. Originally created with a focus on local gas distribution, it developed larger facilities and longer gas mains in response to changes in customer demand and distribution.
In 1908, the company opened a retail store in Toronto, where customers could purchase electric lights, ovens, and other gas- and electric-powered appliances. In the 1950s, Consumers Gas completed the longest natural gas pipeline in the world, running from Alberta to Montreal.
In 1995, IPL Energy of Calgary acquired Consumers Gas, rebranding it as Enbridge Consumers Gas. Due to government regulations mandating the separation of distribution services and retail services, the retail aspects of the company were spun off into Enbridge Home Services. In 2002, Enbridge Consumers Gas was renamed to Enbridge Gas Distribution, and gained its 2 millionth customer before 2010.
