Barrie Electricity and Natural Gas History
With a population of more than 136,000 people, Barrie is the 34th largest city in Canada. Barrie was founded in 1833, in the location of a supply depot for British soldiers during the War of 1812.
While Barrie hosted a number of military members and facilities, and had a relatively large number of residents in the late 1800s, the city itself was rather slow to modernize. In fact, it was the nearby village of Midhurst that first gave Barrie residents access to electricity. Midhurst had been the site of a number of grist and saw mills, which relied on power generated by nearby Willow Creek. The first generation station was activated in August of 1888, powering 17 electric lights in Downtown Barrie. This was the first successful transmission of hydroelectricity in the whole of Simcoe County.
Eventually, Barrie founded its own electric utility, Barrie Hydro, which was acquired by PowerStream in 2008.
