Ponoka Electricity and Natural Gas Background
Ponoka is a small town in central Alberta, with a population of about 6,800 residents. Ponoka began as a waypoint on the Calgary-Edmonton Trail in the 1870s, and became the site of a Canadian Pacific Railway Station in 1891 (which was in fact one of the very first buildings to be constructed in the area).
The town of Ponoka owns the local electrical transmission system and serves as the wire service provider to the area’s residents. However, Ponoka does not have its own electric utility. Instead, ENMAX Power is the regulated provider of electricity at RRO rates, and ATCO Gas is the area’s regulated natural gas supplier.
