Fort Macleod Electricity and Natural Gas Background
Fort Macleod, originally founded as Macleod in 1892, is a small town with a population of roughly 3,000 residents. Fort Macleod gets its name from a fort that was built in the area in 1874, and served as a barracks for the Mounties.
Fort Macleod owns and maintains the town’s electrical distribution system through the Fort Macleod Electrical Department, which serves as the wire service provider for town’s residents and businesses. ENMAX used to be the area’s regulated electricity provider, but since October 2018, FortisAlberta started distribution in the Fort Macleod region. Currently, the Regulated Rate Option (RRO) electricity provider is EPCOR, while Direct Energy Regulated Services is the regulated supplier of natural gas.
While many cities and towns in Alberta rely on the natural gas industry to fuel their economies, Fort Macleod is home to one of the largest wind farms in Alberta, the 75 megawatt McBride Lake Wind Farm.
