Just Energy Alberta L.P. is an affiliate of Just Energy Group Inc., a Canadian natural gas and electricity provider. Just Energy (JE) provides electricity and natural gas services to both residential and business customers operating in markets of all scales. It works with homes, and small and mid-sized businesses in Alberta under the Just Energy name, while providing services to large commercial organizations in Alberta as Hudson Energy. The retailer is available across Alberta, including major cities such as Calgary and Edmonton.
Just Energy services
Just Energy offers a range of customized services and contract offerings, including price protection programs:
Fixed Power: For the length of the contract, electricity rates are fixed at a stable, predetermined price, minimizing changes in energy cost and allowing for easy long-term budgeting. Negotiated power rates include commodity power costs as well as retail-related costs.
Indexed Power: JE’s indexed power contract features a “fixed adder,” which locks in all retail costs for the duration of the contract. That adder is appended to the floating “spot” market price of electricity each month during the contract term.
Just Energy History
Just Energy (TSX & NYSE: JE), headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, and Houston, Texas, is an energy retailer that currently has annual sales of around $3,8 billion as of 2019. Founded in 1997, Just Energy is notable among energy retailers for having been founded by a woman, Rebecca MacDonald, who is currently the executive chair.
It began selling natural gas as Energy Savings Group in Ontario in 1997, generating sales of $81 million in just three years, but saw its success explode beginning in 2001 due to rising gas prices. By 2003, revenue exceeded $3 billion — by that time, the company was known as Energy Savings Income Fund (ESIF).
ESIF’s first began marketing electricity in Ontario in 2002, but by 2005 it had begun selling electricity and natural gas to residents and businesses in the province of Alberta, as well as throughout much of Canada and the US. In 2009, ESIF consolidated itself and its many companies — including U.S. Energy Savings, Ontario Energy Savings and Alberta Energy Savings — all under the umbrella of the Just Energy Income Fund for all of its Canadian and American markets, establishing the Just Energy brand. It incorporated as Just Energy Group in 2011.
Just Energy markets retail energy throughout Canada and the United States under its own name, as well as through affiliates including Hudson Energy, Amigo Energy and Commerce Energy. In 2012, it entered the European energy market as Hudson Energy UK.
Just Energy natural gas and electricity rates
Just Energy natural gas and electricity rates may vary depending on your energy plan, your location and even your usage (in case you’re a commercial customer). In Alberta, Just Energy offers residential price-protection programs, also known as fixed-rate plans, for both 36- and 60-month terms.
Whether you want to check the current Just Energy rates or compare it to other Alberta electricity and natural gas providers, EnergyRates.ca will do the work for you. This energy rate comparison tool lists all major energy providers in Alberta, which allows you to see their natural gas and electricity rates in a single place. The website also provides you with historical energy rates and lets you check the available utility providers in your area according to your postal code.
Just Energy green energy options: Just Energy customers can opt for green energy plans for both natural gas and power. Such programs can offset your home’s emissions or ensure that a portion — or even 100% — of your home’s electricity usage comes from green sources of electricity. Although these greener plans make your home more eco-friendly, they can also make your utilities slightly costlier. As of June 2019, the rate addition of the 100% JustGreen program in Alberta was of $9.99 per month for each commodity.
Just Energy Perks

For every dollar spent on your monthly Just Energy bills, you will earn one Perks point. Some of the rewards include LED light bulbs and other energy-efficient products, prepaid Visa cards and gift cards.
All you have to do to accumulate points is remain in good standing with Just Energy. As stated on the Just Energy website, customers can receive 2,500 points upfront as new Perks members.
