The first are regulated-rate companies, which offer regulated rates (ROLR, previously called RRO) for natural gas and electricity. As of 2025, regulated providers’ prices are determined biannually by the Alberta Utilities Commission, and they are required to charge you at the current regulated rate. Alternatively, competitive retailers are companies licensed by the province of Alberta to sell electricity and natural gas throughout the province, without geographic restrictions. Their rates are solely determined by the retailer.
