SaskPower was founded in 1929 by the provincial government of Saskatchewan to provide electrical services to homes and businesses in communities not yet large enough to have their own electric utilities, such as those that were founded in Saskatoon and Regina. Today, SaskPower is the province’s single largest electricity supplier, serving more than half a million residential and commercial customers across Saskatchewan.
SaskPower is a Crown corporation, and is currently designated as the sole authorized supplier of electricity in the province, with the exception of two municipal utilities, Saskatoon Light & Power and Swift Current Electricity Services. Because of this, residents of Saskatchewan do not have the ability to contract with retail suppliers of electricity.
