What is a Site ID?
The site ID is a 13-digit number that every site in Alberta must have. This is a way power companies found to identify their customer’s properties in a unique way. Every property connected to a meter in Alberta has a site ID for electricity and another one for natural gas. For electricity, the Site ID begins with one or two numbers. Natural gas Site IDs start with three numbers. This number is not only a unique identifier for your property; it also reveals who the distributor is in your area.
Each distribution company in Alberta has a number. The first digits of your site ID will tell you who’s the WSP in your area. If your bill comes with an 11-digit site ID, the first two digits tell you who is the wire service provider. On the other hand, if the site ID on your bill has 13 digits, the first four digits will tell you who is your WSP. The first few numbers of the Site ID will change with each WSP.
How Do I Find My Site ID?
Your site ID can be found on your energy bill. It is typically placed towards the top of the page with the words “Site ID” next to the number. Sometimes the Site ID lies next to your personal information or the retailer charge.
If you do not have your energy bill on hand, you can use our Site ID lookup tool to find your site number. The tool will also show you other site-specific information, such as your meter number and your Wire Service Provider.
How Does the Site ID Catalogue Work?
Our Site ID Catalogue gathers data provided by the Wire Service Providers in Alberta. Once an address is entered, the Catalogue searches the database to find the corresponding Site ID. The database is updated every two weeks with new information.
Why use the Site ID Catalogue
The main reason to use our Site ID catalogue is to learn your Site ID number. Knowing this number is important when signing up for an electricity or natural gas plan; energy retailers require your Site ID to finalize the agreement. Your Site ID number is also needed when talking with your distribution company regarding meter installs, supply upgrades, or delivery costs. Looking up your Site ID before signing an electricity or natural gas agreement helps ensure you are paying for the correct energy supply. Signing an agreement for an incorrect Site ID means you will be responsible for someone else’s energy supply.
