Water Test Kits in Canada

Water test kits are often overlooked but they can help you measure water quality for a range of purposes. But, which one should Canadians choose, and how do they change from one another? There is a sea of water testing system options in Canada, and we’ve reviewed the top options, as well as their details, including pros and cons, for you.

Something businesses or homeowners may not know is that water quality can influence equipment, plumbing, cleaning processes, boilers, water heaters, and filtration systems. Reviewing water quality is not only important for your health, but also prevents infrastructure issues.

For all these reasons, it is necessary to keep monitoring water quality, and to make this analysis easier and more effective, there are water quality test kits for both companies and home use with different methods and purposes, such as for drinking water, industrial or agricultural needs, healthcare settings, and even for pools and spas. Different methods and solutions for each case, and we will try to guide you on this regardless of your goals.

Home Water Testing vs Laboratory Testing

A $15 test strip and a professional laboratory water testing kit are not equivalent and are designed for different purposes. Home Testing is more affordable (around $20) and, in summary, is a convenient and simple way to monitor water quality. You do everything at home and just need to collect a sample, follow the instructions, and get a result after a few minutes. Fast like that.

On the other hand, laboratory testing, more common for businesses, is more complex and pricey (from $300 to more than $700 depending on the kit). Although it’s also a kit, after the test, a laboratory will analyze a water sample for a much broader range of parameters using controlled testing methods. An option that can be particularly useful when you need more reliable information about a specific concern.

We also highlight that although DIY (home testing) are fast, they are also simpler and can’t detect PFAS (synthetic organofluorine compounds), VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) , or provide bacteria quantification, for example. It cannot tell you everything, as water can be tricky and look clean while containing contaminants that are invisible for humans to detect alone. Knowing what you need to test (your main concerns) is essential before choosing the ideal water testing kit so it can assess what needs to be evaluated. Otherwise, the test will be pointless.

The Ideal Water Testing Kit for Each Water Quality Concern

Multi-Parameter Water Testing Kits – among the most convenient options for people who want to check several characteristics of their water at once. The kit may include measurements such as pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrate, nitrite, and other indicators, and can be useful for homes, apartments, cottages, businesses, and maintenance checks. We highlight that is always safe to check the product specifications before purchasing a kit.

pH Water Testing Kits – pH testing kits measure how acidic or alkaline water is on a scale that generally ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 considered neutral. It might be useful for homes, pools and spas, restaurants, commercial facilities, water treatment systems, and businesses in general, regardless of the niche, using water-sensitive equipment.

Water Hardness Test Kits – That is for sure a common concern for many households and businesses, and we talked about it in some articles related to water treatment possibilities. These test kits can help determine whether a water softener or another treatment approach may be appropriate. A way to guide you in an effective way.

Chlorine Testing Kits – Testing chlorine can be particularly useful for homeowners who want to understand their water treatment, as well as businesses that use water in processes where chlorine levels matter, as Chlorine can affect taste and odour.

Iron Water Testing Kits – Elevated iron can cause reddish or brownish staining on sinks, toilets, laundry, and fixtures, which can, besides everything, affect the taste and appearance of water. The kit can determine whether iron is present and, depending on the product, approximately how much is present.

Lead Water Testing Kits – a serious water-quality concern, as exposure can pose health risks. For this reason, it is essential to follow the testing instructions carefully and consider certified laboratory testing where appropriate. In Canada, according to the Government, the allowed concentration for lead in drinking water is 0.005 mg/L (5 µg/L).

Bacteria Water Testing Kits – Bacteria testing kits are designed to detect indicators of microbial contamination, and there are kits designed for relatively simple at-home screening, and others that require incubation or laboratory analysis.

Alkalinity Test Kits – Alkalinity refers to water’s ability to neutralize acids, being an important part of water chemistry and can influence pH stability. Common for pools, spas, water treatment, and industrial processes.

On the Government of Canada’s website, you can check the guidelines on waterborne pathogens in drinking water.

Home Water Quality Testing Kit: Step-by-step and Features

All the information below applies to homeowners and simple water testing kits, but details will vary from each product and its requirements (contaminants, solution, method). In most of these basic kits, all you need to do is:

  • Read the instructions carefully before starting, as each brand and product has its own particularities.
  • Collect your water sample using a clean and new container if the kit you got doesn’t come with one already. It is essential to avoid touching the inside to keep it clean and not affect the test results.
  • Perform the test according to the kit instructions, as we said before. For strip tests, for example, dip the strip briefly (usually 1-2 seconds). For liquid reagent tests, add the number of drops according to the instructions.
  • Time to wait to read the result. The time and even the step-by-step details will depend on each test kit. Almost all the brands and products have straightforward information and practices to make the process practical and easy to apply.

Depending on the type of kit, you may be able to test for things such as:

  • pH;
  • Hardness;
  • Nitrates;
  • Nitrites;
  • Alkalinity
  • Certain bacteria;
  • Chlorine;
  • Iron;
  • Copper;
  • Other specific water-quality parameters.

Laboratory Water Testing Kit: Step-by-step and Features

These kits typically provide the containers and instructions needed to collect a water sample, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. It is essential to know beforehand the purpose of your test kit.

As this test is pricey but more complex and complete, it is appropriate when you need information about a larger number of parameters or when the results will be used to make an important decision (maintenance, treatment solution or important investments). For private wells, industry or businesses in general, or situations where contamination can’t happen, professional testing can provide the whole picture of water quality.

The most common ways water tests are done are strips and liquid tests. Test strips are convenient and easy to use, as, similar to the home test we talked about, you just need to dip the strip into the sample and compare the resulting colour with the manufacturer’s chart. Another method is the liquid reagent test, which uses chemicals that react with substances in the water.

Every place has different testing requirements and water consumption particularities. Is water needed for consumption (drinking water), for irrigation, or for industrial processes? These answers will guide your business in making the choice.
