In 1985, Alberta began deregulating its natural gas market, and followed suit with the deregulation of electricity providers in 1996. For consumers, this means you can choose the energy provider that’s right for you.
When it comes to purchasing electricity or natural gas for your home or business, there are two types of energy providers operating in Alberta. The first are regulated-rate companies, which offer regulated (RRO) rates for natural gas and electricity. Regulated providers’ prices are determined monthly by the Alberta Utilities Commission, and they are required to charge you at the current regulated rate. Alternatively, competitive retailers are companies licensed by the province of Alberta to sell and electricity throughout the province, without geographic restrictions. Their rates are solely determined by the retailer.
At EnergyRates.ca, we can help you compare the various energy providers and their rates, and find the best deal for your electricity and natural gas needs. Working hand in hand, we’ll identify the company that will be the best fit, and keep your long-term energy prices as low as possible. Contact us today for a free consultation.

Electricity & Natural Gas Companies
There are many retail energy companies offering services in Alberta. How can you possibly choose between them? That’s why we’ve worked diligently to collect background information and data on some of Alberta’s largest providers of electricity and natural gas to homeowners, small businesses, and large industrial clients, including AltaGas, ATCO Power, ATCOenergy, Direct Energy Business, ENMAX Energy, Hudson Energy, Just Energy, Superior Energy, and TransAlta.
Regulated Rate Providers
While Alberta’s energy market has been deregulated for many years now, regulated rate providers give Alberta residents and businesses an alternative to retail offerings. The majority of Alberta utility customers are served by AltaGas Utility, Direct Energy Regulated Services, ENMAX Power Corporation, and EPCOR Energy Alberta.
However, a number of smaller city-owned utilities also provide regulated services to local residents. Some of the cities with such municipal utilities include Lethbridge, Red Deer, Crowsnet Pass, Cardston, Fort Macleod, and Ponoka.
Small Commercial Fixed Rate Providers
Are you looking for an affordable fixed rate electricity or natural gas plan for your home? EasyMax and Encor by EPCOR are two retail product lines designed specifically to fulfill the small-scale energy needs of homeowners and small business owners in Alberta.
Wire Services Providers
Chances are that you’ve noticed a charge on your electricity or gas bill under the heading of wire service, transmission, or distribution. That’s because the companies that sell electricity and gas are separate from those that are responsible for ensuring that your power and gas stay on 24/7. Some of the largest wires service providers in Alberta include AltaGas Utilities, ATCO Gas, ENMAX Power, EPCOR Distribution & Transmission, FortisAlberta, and City of Lethbridge.
