Gazifère is a private company that distributes and supplies natural gas in Québec’s Outaouais region, which includes Gatineau, Chelsea, Fort-Coulonge, Montebello, and Grand-Remous. Gazifère is a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc. and serves residential, commercial and industrial natural gas consumers.
Gazifère is one of the two distributors of natural gas in Québec (the other one being Énergir, formerly known as Gaz Métro), and was created in 1959. Currently, the company serves more than 43,000 customers, including residential, commercial, institutional and industrial customers, and operates approximately 987 kilometres of natural gas infrastructure. As a natural gas distribution company, Gazifère’s profits mainly come from such activity.
Understanding your Gazifère bill
Monthly fixed charge: This is a monthly cost related to customer services, such as emergencies and meter readings.
Delivery charge: This is related to the costs of transporting natural gas from Gazifère’s facilities to your home or business.
Transportation charge: The transportation charges represent the costs of transporting natural gas from the generation plants to Gazifère’s facilities.
Natural gas supply: This is the cost of natural gas as a commodity. These prices can change from one month to another based on production and demand.
Cost adjustment: The cost adjustment can be a credit or a charge. The calculation is based on the difference between the estimated and the actual costs of serving natural gas for consumers each month. The main idea behind it is to protect both consumers and distributors from paying more than they should.
Cap-and-trade charges: These fees are charged by the Government of Québec. The revenue from such charges is used by the government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the province.
Natural gas servicing charges: These charges and tariffs are related to additional services done by Gazifère, such as equipment rental and specific taxes.
