Sudbury Electricity and Natural Gas History
Sudbury (officially known as Greater Sudbury) is Canada’s 29th largest city, with a population of over 160,000 people. The first European settlers in the area were French Jesuit missionaries. However, they didn’t have solace for long, as the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway uncovered large quantities of nickel-copper ore, spurring waves of settlers looking to make a living in the newly founded mines.
Mining served as the basis for Sudbury economy through much of the 20th century, and even today roughly 16,000 of the city’s inhabitants work in the mines or in related industries.
The introduction of electricity to Sudbury was largely due to the desire for convenient public transportation. In 1912, the Copper Cliffs Suburban Electric Railway Company was formed, and introduced electric streetcars to Sudbury’s streets in 1915. This streetcar system continued to operate until 1950. The first local power station was built by the Wahnapitae Power Company in 1905 on the Wanapitei River. Several additional stations were built over the next few years, all of which were placed under the control of Ontario Hydro (now Hydro One) in 1929. Sudbury’s current local utility is Sudbury Hydro, which also provides service to West Nipissing.
