Burlington Electricity and Natural Gas History
The city of Burlington, located 60 kilometres to the west of Toronto, has a population of about 176,000 people. Originally settled in the late 1700s, the city derives its name from the town of Bridlington in Yorkshire, England. However, it wasn’t until eight years after the first English immigrants settled in the region that the village of Burlington was officially founded in 1874.
Local trade was largely agricultural in nature, due to the amenable climate, rich soil, and ready sources of lumber in the region. However, the ease of shipping produce through Port Nelson meant that railways did not reach Burlington until the turn of the century, slowing the pace of industrialization in the area.
While many Ontario cities farther removed from Toronto enjoyed gas or even electric lighting as early as the 1880s, Burlington’s streets remained unlit as of 1890. In 1892, coal oil lamps were installed, and were used until the turn of the century. Electricity service finally arrived in Burlington in 1900, when the Electric Light Company built a generation plant and installed electric lamps in the town centre. However, electrical service was spotty for many years, until ownership and maintenance of the plant was ultimately handed over to Ontario Hydro (now Hydro One), which brought with electricity transmitted from large generation plants at Niagara Falls.
Today, approximately 67,000 of Burlington residents’ homes and businesses receive electrical service from Burlington Hydro Inc., the city-owned utility company. Burlington Hydro currently operates 32 electrical substations, and maintains roughly 1,600 kilometres of electrical distribution line.
