The distribution and supply of electricity in the Saguenay area is provided by Hydro-Jonquière, a municipally-owned electric utility. Like all companies of its type in the province, Hydro-Jonquière is a member of the Association of Redistributors of Electricity of Québec (AREQ — Association des redistributeurs de electricité du Québec).
The electric utility gets 98% of its electricity from Hydro-Québec, and owns more than 450 kilometres of power lines. Since Québec is a regulated electricity market, all of the Hydro-Jonquiére rates are approved by the Régie de l’énergie.
