Saguenay (also known as Ville de Saguenay, in French) is one of the largest cities in Québec, with a population of around 150,000 people, where approximately 98% of them have French as their mother tongue. Home to the Musée du Fjord and the Parc Aventures Cap Jaseux, Saguenay preserves its centuries-old heritage while looking to the future.
The city has a transitioning economy, which is currently highly based on technologies related to commodities such as wood, natural gas and aluminum, but also on the agriculture and tourism sectors.
Saguenay had one of the most expressive nominal per capita GDP growth rates in Canada between 2001 and the early 2010s. Although this is great news for anyone in the city, there is even more that people can do to save money on their living costs. Homes and commercial customers in Saguenay can get the most out of Québec’s deregulated natural gas market, and pay for the cheapest available energy rates.

Electricity in Saguenay (Hydro-Jonquière)
The distribution and supply of electricity in the Saguenay area is provided by Hydro-Jonquière, a municipally-owned electric utility. Like all companies of its type in the province, Hydro-Jonquière is a member of the Association of Redistributors of Electricity of Québec (AREQ — Association des redistributeurs de electricité du Québec).
The electric utility gets 98% of its electricity from Hydro-Québec, and owns more than 450 kilometres of power lines. Since Québec is a regulated electricity market, all of the Hydro-Jonquiére rates are approved by the Régie de l’énergie.
Some of Hydro-Jonquiére’s main duties include, but are not limited to:
- Billing
- Management of the electricity grid
- Management of power outages
