Hamilton Electricity and Natural Gas History
One of Ontario’s oldest cities, Hamilton was founded in 1846, and now boasts a population of more than half a million people, making it the 10th largest city in Canada. While it was not a prominent city in its first few decades of existence, the city’s early adoption of many modern electrical conveniences made its future prospects clear: the first commercial telephone exchange in Canada was completed in the city in 1878, and soon after added multiple electric railways and two funicular lifts.
While electricity made an early entrance in Hamilton, hydroelectric power did not reach the city until 1896, when The Dominion Power and Transportation Company completed transmission lines carry electricity to the city from electric plants located at DeCew Falls, near St. Catherines. Hamilton’s electric entrepreneurs were very aware of the potential growth their developments could bring to the city, and one promotional booklet published at the turn of the century called Hamilton, “The Electric City,” with another stating that it had the “cheapest power in Canada.”
This early adoption and promotion of modern communications and transportation technology quickly made Hamilton a hub for manufacturing and trade, with the city’s population exploding to more than 150,000 residents and more than 500 manufacturing plants by the end of the 1930s. This focus on manufacturing continued to form the core of Hamilton’s economy until the 1960s. Between the 1930s and 1960s, three major Canadian businesses were founded in Hamilton: Canadian Tire in 1934, Pioneer Petroleum in 1956, and Tim Hortons in 1964.
The city of Hamilton currently has partial ownership of Horizon Utilities (through its utility company Hamilton Utilities Corporation), which provides electricity to residents of the city, and which is also partially owned by the city of St. Catherines.
