Established in 1892, Edmonton actually predates the existence of the province. It became the capital of Alberta when the province was formed in 1905 — its population of 8,500 residents at the time comprised a tiny fraction of the total provincial population of 185,000.

Despite Edmonton’s initial small size, the city figured largely in the history of Canadian energy production. The Edmonton Electric Lighting and Power Company was created in 1891. The City of Edmonton acquired the company in 1902, reforming it as a municipal utility, Edmonton Power. Now known as EPCOR, it is one of the largest electricity and natural gas companies in Canada.

The city’s development was delayed compared to other Albertan towns founded near gas and oil reserves, mainly because Alberta reserved all rights to the natural resources of the area when the province was created. The city wasn’t allowed to touch the natural gas and oil reserves that surrounded it boundaries. The provincial government didn’t release its ownership of the area’s mineral rights until 1930.

The city’s growth took off with the 1947 oil boom thanks to the discovery of oil near Leduc, 35 kilometres away. The city’s fortunes grew steadily until oil prices declined in the 1980s. However, increased interest in the development of the Athabasca oil sands has led to an influx of people and capital.

Edmonton, the one-time “Oil Capital of Canada” has worked to stay competitive in an increasingly fraught natural gas and oil market. Companies in the city have spent decades developing technology for processing various petroleum reserves, with investments in the field second only to competitors in Saudi Arabia. At present, major oil- and natural gas-related projects in Edmonton are valued at $34.4 billion, comprising 59.5 percent of the city’s current economic development.

Moving to Edmonton?

How to set up your utilities in Edmonton

Whether you’re moving to the city for the first time or just switching residences, setting up your utility services ahead of the move can help you stave off a headache on your moving day. Since water is regulated, there aren’t multiple providers or plans for consumers to compare in Edmonton. For over a century, EPCOR has been managing water services all over the city, keeping residents and commercial businesses with drinking and running water for agriculture, factories, showers, and more. In addition to providing water, EPCOR also works behind the scenes, monitoring quality, maintaining infrastructure, and responding when something goes wrong. The company tests water quality over 300,000 times a year, and continually works on upgrades to enhance water quality and the system’s resilience.

According to their website, most customers pay about $74 per month for water usage on an average, single-family residential household bill. Once residents and business set up their services, EPCOR handles not only the delivery of water, but also wastewater treatment and drainage services. The company also manages electricity services in Edmonton, so consumers can set up multiple services at once.

How to set up a water supply

If that is the case or you moved to a new place, setting up the water service is essential. The main tip is registering for water services with EPCOR as soon as you have the move-in date. It is possible to sign up online through the customer portal at epcor.com or by talking to their team over the phone or in person.

While registering, you will have to provide basic information, such as your full name, new address, move-in date, and present an ID document. If you’re renting a place, the landlord might have services arranged. It is always good to double-check to avoid surprises, though.

EPCOR Customer Information

Customer Care Phone: 780 412 6800

Email: customercare@epcor.com

Address: Epcor Tower, 2000-10423 101 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 0E8

Edmonton Natural Gas and Electricity Retailers Residents of Edmonton have their choice of just about every energy retailer operating in Alberta.
