Guelph Electricity and Natural Gas History<\/h2>\n
Guelph is located in Southern Ontario, and has a population of about 122,000 people. Despite its small size, Guelph has an outsized reputation thanks to its extremely low crime rate, and one of the lowest crime rates in Canada.<\/p>\n
Guelph was founded in 1827 as the headquarters of the Canada Company, a British land development company which was in continuous operation until 1953. Guelph was essentially a \u201ccompany town,\u201d which meant that it was designed and built to be an industrialized city. However, Guelph remained small and lightly populated until the Grand Trunk Railroad reached Guelph in 1856. It was only then that the city really began to grow.<\/p>\n
Electricity arrived in Guelph in 1883, with a demonstration of electric lights in the town\u2019s Exhibition Park. The Board of Light and Heat Commissioners, the first local utility, was founded in 1903, in response to the inability of the privately owned Guelph Light and Power Company to meet local demand for electricity. The local utility purchase the company\u2019s assets, and immediately ordered the construction of a steam plant, hydro plant, and streetlight system. Increased demand led the city to sign an agreement with Ontario Hydro (now Hydro One) to purchase electricity produced by the company\u2019s hydro plants in Niagara.<\/p>\n
In 1967, the Board of Light and Heat Commissioners was renamed as Guelph Hydro, and continues to be owned entirely by the city of Guelph, through Guelph Municipal Holdings, Inc.
