There are a number of Alberta<\/a> government programs and private organizations in the province which provide financial assistance to those who are struggling to cover the costs of energy service and other basic necessities. Below are just a few of the options available to those in need.<\/p>\n

Alberta Works Income Support<\/a><\/h2>\n

Alberta Works helps low-income and unemployed residents of Alberta. For those who do not have the money to cover basic needs and requirements, Alberta Works offers Income Support to qualifying Albertans. In addition to health benefits and job training, the Income Support program provides an emergency allowance and assistance with utility disconnection notices.<\/p>\n

Alberta Child Benefit<\/a><\/h2>\n

The Alberta government offers an Alberta Child Benefit (ACB) to households with incomes with children under the age of 18, and a total household income of less than $41,220 per year. The value of the benefit is based upon a number of variables, with total year benefits ranging from $0 to a maximum of $2,760. Families which qualify for the ACB may also be eligible for the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit<\/a>, which can have a value of up to $2,012 per year.<\/p>\n

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped<\/a><\/h2>\n

The Alberta government offers financial assistance to those with severe permanent handicaps through the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program. Qualifying applicants are eligible for a monthly allowance of up to $1,588, as well as a number of health benefits.<\/p>\n

Red Cross Alberta Community Housing Assistance<\/a><\/h2>\n

Between October and April, the Canadian Red Cross provides assistance to Calgary<\/a> residents who are struggling to pay for essential utilities by offering a partial one-time payment. This offer is only available in situations where the customer is facing imminent disconnection.<\/p>\n

To apply for this benefit, call the Red Cross\u2019s Community Housing Support Program at (403) 541-6119.<\/p>\n

The availability of resources changes on a regular basis due to budgetary concerns and other issues. 211 Alberta<\/a> offers a wealth of constantly updated information on social service and financial assistance programs.
