Homeowners and businesses located in the heart of the city of Saskatoon receive their electricity from the municipally owned Saskatoon Light & Power utility. Saskatoon Light & Power is a regulated energy provider mandated to provide electricity in a safe and cost-effective way to consumers within the city limits, as they were drawn in 1958. Those outside these bounds are served directly by SaskPower.<\/p>\n
Saskatoon Light & Power strives to provide energy at an affordable rate by purchasing in bulk from the province\u2019s largest service provider, SaskPower. This allows the utility to purchase at much lower rates than would otherwise be available to the general consumer. With this said, the rates offered by Saskatoon Light & Power were higher than those offered to customers in the areas controlled by SaskPower for the 2018 billing year.<\/p>\n
In 1906, a few years after Saskatoon was first incorporated as a village, Saskatoon Light & Power was founded as the sole electric provider for Saskatoon and its population of 4,500 people.<\/p>\n
More than 110 years after its founding, Saskatoon Light & Power provides electrical service to more than 117,000 residents of Saskatoon, with a service area of 69 square kilometers. In addition, the utility owns and services 25,000 light fixtures in the city.<\/p>\n
